Optometrist in Brandon
Eye exams for children, which should be done before she or he attends school for the first time, have two big advantages. First, our Brandon optometrist will determine how well your child is seeing, and prescribe a pair of eyeglasses if necessary. Second, common eye diseases and conditions will be screened for. Here at Optical Outlets, we are dedicated to your child’s eye health and best possible vision.
Unlike when he or she goes to other types of doctors, the good news is that there is nothing to be nervous about when your child is examined by our Brandon optometrist. There is only some mild stinging when eye drops are applied to dilate the pupils. Eye exams for children are not painful nor are they scary. Visual testing includes reading from an eye chart, or for those children who are not yet old enough to read, the tumbling E game is used. If you are not familiar with it, a series of E’s are shown. Your child will say in which direction each is pointing. It’s both fun and effective. Nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism are all possible refractive issues. Just as adults have to be concerned about them, so too will a child need corrective eyeglasses if he or she is not seeing sharply and clearly up close, far away, or at all distances. Diseases such as cataracts and glaucoma are not just for grown ups. Kids can get them, too. And other conditions, including lazy eye (amblyopia), drooping eyelid, and crossed eye (strabismus) are specific to children. Our Brandon optometrist will diagnose and address them promptly, so as to avoid any long term issues.
Beginning at school age, your child should have an eye exam at least every other year, and perhaps more often if there is a reason based on the results of the checkup. Call us to arrange an appointment.
